Hello Farm Friends!

The 2021 growing season is cruising along thanks to the warm growing season this year. It's hard to explain how far ahead our summer veggies are from normal. Everything is loving the heat and growing strong. I can't really remember many years like this one when it comes to how fast things are developing with the plants out there.

This could be a banner year for our summer harvest.

There is one issue that needs to be addressed right away for this potential to carry through into our harvest season -- deer. We have a weekend project planned to put up our mobile deer fence around our veggie plot to protect our harvest.

The dry weather is forcing deer in our area to find new sources of food as their options dry up. We love to have deer on our property for fertility purposes. In fact, I grow specific cover crops to draw them into our asparagus and feed them the things they absolutely love. They have access to some areas of the farm all summer.

We also open up the veggie plot after our fall harvest so the deer can forage late fall and through the winter on the leftovers that remain.

The problem is that they tend to absolutely love the veggies we grow in the summer, too. So it is time to get this project done to create a protective barrier around our veggies.

I plan to start work early on both this Saturday and this Sunday mornings to beat the heat, and I could use a few extra hands to help assemble and hang the fence in the appropriate place. It's not hard work, but more hands make it go easier and faster.

Anyone want to come out to the farm this weekend to give a helping hand and to see the summer growing progress?

Come whenever you can. Leave when you need to. I will be going by 8 am each day if anyone would like to join in the project.

Respond to this e-mail if you would like to help on the project so I can prepare for those who come. Feel free to reply if you have any questions or need directions as well.

I plan to send out more updates as our growing season unfolds and various things are ready for harvest, so stay tuned!

Blessings,

Tim Martin
